The Weekly, 10/10/14

Dear family,

John 20:30 says, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.” Likewise, there are undoubtedly many things that Jesus has done in your life and many ways that he has worked that only you, he, and maybe a few others are privileged to know about.

This is one reason why community is so important in our current situation as a church family. Please be getting together with other believers to celebrate what Jesus is doing in your life and also to encourage, support, hear, embrace, LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

FINAL SUNDAY for the Annual Fall Coat Drive

This is the final Sunday to bring new and used coats with you to church! We are praying to bless our communities very practically through a coat drive this winter! Please search your closets and give generously!

Update from the BOAA

Six weeks ago Pastor Mark stepped aside while our Board of Advisors and Accountability examine accusations brought forward by former staff and elders. That extensive process is nearly complete and we expect to have those results to share with you very soon. In the meantime, we ask for your continued prayers for Pastor Mark and his family, Pastor Dave Bruskas and the lead pastors as they continue to preach and lead during this time, and also for the Board of Elders while they prepare their final report. Lastly, please pray for our Mars Hill Church family that Jesus would be glorified in our lives.

Final Services at Downtown Seattle & U-District

The most common word that was heard at two of our churches on Sunday (besides “Jesus” of course) was “bittersweet.” Our church had been preparing for the closure/consolidation of a couple of our locations for almost a month but that didn’t make it any easier.

The buildings were packed out for services. Then, the congregations celebrated all that Jesus has done for the last several years with stories, testimonies, potlucks, and tears.

Here are a few pictures from last Sunday:

Mars Hill U-District had a packed house.

Mars Hill Downtown had testimonies during and after the service.

Pastor Cam Huxford and Ghost Ship led worship of our great God through song.

Open House at Mars Hill Ballard

On Wednesday evening, Mars Hill Ballard hosted an Open House to welcome the families of Mars Hill Downtown Seattle and U-District. People were able to come and get familiar with the church that will now be their home and join the Leadership Sync afterwards. It was a great time of fellowship, making new friends, and praying for God’s grace upon Mars Hill Ballard.

Please pray for Sunday morning’s launch as these families join together as one to worship Jesus in spirit and in truth.

Sunday Service Changes

Some of our churches have changed their Sunday service schedules. For each church’s details, please check the individual sites.

APPLY TODAY for Short-Term Mission Trips to Ethiopia

Mars Hill will be hosting several short-term mission trips to Ethiopia in 2015.

We are so excited to host these trips in partnership with our friends at New Covenant Foundation. Several lead pastors went earlier this year to be trained and equipped to lead you this upcoming year.

The application is now available online! If you’re interested in going on one of these trips, apply today! The deadline to apply is November 15, 2014.

We are so encouraged by your overwhelming support and requests to know how you can pray for our church. Here are some ways that you can be praying for Mars Hill:

  • For Sunday’s launch of Mars Hill Ballard and the transition for Mars Hill Downtown Seattle and Mars Hill U-District. Pray for a smooth transition, new friendships, and more changed lives through this joining together.

Here's some blog posts and updates you may have missed this week:

Rainier Valley: The fall membership class finished up this week and there are now several new members at Mars Hill Rainier Valley! Jesus has been so good and faithful!

Olympia: Two women who are participating in the membership class connected and became friends. At the last class, they were sharing with each other that one of them is pregnant with her first child and the other has decided to start the steps towards adoption. It’s great to see people connecting and being excited for what God is doing in each other’s lives.

Spokane: There is a wonderful young family that has become part of the Spokane Core Group in the last two months but they live about 90 miles south of Spokane. They have been faithful to make the drive and attend each of the services every Sunday. After much prayer and the leadership of the Holy Spirit, they are moving north to be closer to Mars Hill Spokane and to get connected in a Community Group. The Lord continues to graciously bring families to the Core Group.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.

Cheerful givers wanted

Jesus is the most generous person who ever lived. He gave his life so that we might live. As Christians, we give our time, talent, and money joyfully in response to Jesus’ generosity and to help more people meet Jesus.
