With a few billion Christians around the world worshiping Jesus as part of the church, you’d think that defining what the church is, why it exists, and what it means for us should be foregone conclusion—but it isn’t.
I guarantee you that if you were to walk into any church and ask the people to tell you what the church means, you’d get blank stares, mumbling, or a series of conflicting definitions.
Mars Hill Church is made up of thousands of people who come from different backgrounds, experiences, and understandings. In the last year alone, we’ve grown by a few thousand people who are now figuring out what Mars Hill is, what we believe, and how much they want to commit to our community.
Because of this, I’ve no doubt that many people in our church will differ in how they, think about the church, love the church, serve the church, and see the church.
So, this summer we’re going to teach on the church in our upcoming series, Jesus Loves His Church.
Starting June 24, we’ll spend 11 weeks exploring what the church is, why it exists, and what it means for us.
During this series I want you to wrestle with all that the church is and should be. I also want you to examine your life. Do you love the church? Do you serve the church? Are you committed to the church?
Jesus loves the church, and we should love what Jesus loves.
For many of you, this will be a great time to prayerfully consider membership, volunteering, baptism, joining a Community Group, and giving. In other words, it’s an invitation to love and serve the church with your time, talent, and money—to not just say you love the church, but also to show you love the church, just as Jesus did for us.
The Jesus Loves His Church sermon series will be loosely based on Pastor Mark and Gerry Breshears’ 2008 book Vintage Church.
