The family business

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:7

Parents, whenever possible, include your kids in your work. Get them involved around the house as you do chores, or if you can, take them to work with you sometime. You can probably do all the work yourself, but that’s not the point. The point is to include your children as a way of spending time with them. In the process they will gain a greater sense of ownership and accomplishment. This time together allows everyone involved to get to know one another better. It is the same with God and us.

God is a Father, and serving him in any area of life is like going to work with your dad. As Jesus said, “I must be about my Father’s business” (Luke 2:49 KJV). The majority of Jesus’ ministry years were spent as a carpenter, glorifying God and serving people by working with his adoptive father, Joseph. He spent the last three years of his life preaching, teaching, healing, feeding, evangelizing, leading, and more. Today, Jesus is still doing ministry.

You may not be called to full-time ministry on staff at a local church, but if you are in Christ, you are called to the “work of ministry.” This ministry work includes loving and serving people on your job and in your family, church, and community, on behalf of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ ministry on earth continues through you.

In Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts, which enable us to do meaningful ministry. In Christ, you are gifted.

Read

1 Corinthians 12:4–11

  • Who provides the variety of gifts, service, and activities that we have in life?
  • Why does God give us gifts?
  • What do you consider to be your spiritual gifts? How are you using them? Is that in line with how God intends them to be used?

Prayer

Thank God that he has gifted in you in Christ.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
