God doesn’t exactly pick himself winners

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13

Does God seem to pick certain types of people to accomplish his purposes? Consider some of the characters in the Bible whom God used to do mighty things:

  • David was just a simple shepherd boy, yet God used him to slay a giant.
  • Jonah was a grumpy prophet, but God used him to lead a whole city to repentance.
  • Moses was prone to temper tantrums, and he didn’t speak very well; still, God used him to defeat the most powerful man in the world and set his people free from slavery.

God loves to use ordinary people for extraordinary tasks. We see that as well in our text for today: Peter and John are just a couple of normal dudes who have surrendered to God and are filled with the power of his Spirit. God was with them, and the people took notice!

Do you think you could do the same?

Read

Matthew 28:18–20

  • What comforting promise is given at the end of this text?
  • How does that change how we view our mission to tell others about Jesus?
  • How do you take this message if you do have gifts and talents? Does God still use you, or will he only tend to use unassuming people?

Prayer

Our Father, thank you that you promise to be with us and empower us. Oftentimes we feel so weak and unable to do your will. We are just normal people. But we know that you are not a normal God. We know and trust that you have empowered us and will continue to glorify yourself through our lives. We give you our lives so that you can use them for your glory.

This devotion is adapted from Week 8 of the Acts Study Guide.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
