“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:16–17
Sometimes God allows us to face hard times in order to grow us. When times are hard, we need to know that God really loves us and is working for our good.
One of the greatest things about God is that he is “immutable”—which means that God never changes. His love for us will not change. His hatred of evil will not change. And his ability to control all things for our good will not change.
Wouldn’t it be hard to trust God if he were changing his mind all the time? You would never know what to expect from him. Thankfully, God is not like that. Verse 17 says that in God “there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
We can trust that God is who says he is.
Read
“Of old you laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you will remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,
but you are the same, and your years have no end.”
- What do these verses have to do with our text from the book of James?
- Have you ever felt that maybe God has changed his mind about you?
- Why is God’s immutability a comfort for us?
Pray
Father, thank you that you will never change. Your love for us will never change. Help us to believe this when our circumstances tempt us to doubt these truths. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
