Dr. Bryan Chapell took the stage at Bellevue last week to kick off Mars Hill Church’s second annual Best Sermon Ever series. His sermon, Slob God, will play in each of our 15 video locations this coming Sunday.
Slob God asks the question, “What does it really mean to hear God?” God became one of us, declaring “I am the Son of God,” and promising to save us. Yet many didn’t believe him. Many didn’t hear him. Many today even believe that Jesus was a good moral teacher, but they don’t believe that he is God. Those who really hear him, however, believe. Those who really hear him have been given the gift of hearing by the Father. Do you believe Jesus is who he says he is? He was more than just a man. He is God, and he came to save us.
Dr. Chapell has been married to his wife Kathy for 24 years and they have four grown children. Dr. Chapell has his MDiv in pastor studies and a PhD in speech communication. His preaching and pastoral ministry began in 1976. He served for nearly two decades as president of Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, and today he is the senior pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria, IL. Dr. Chapell has had a rich impact on Mars Hill over the years. He wrote the book, Christ-Centered Preaching, which is used in seminaries worldwide and has been an important text to equip and train our pastors in preaching. He also taught at our ReTrain school for a number of years.
The Best Sermon Ever series started last year as a way to bring exceptional Bible teaching to the people of Mars Hill during the summer months while Pastor Mark Driscoll and many leaders are on vacation. When these teachers were invited to come preach, they were asked to come prepared with their best sermon ever, giving birth to the name of the series.
