Who knew that narcissism and self-esteem were so dangerous? Growing up in our culture, it seems perfectly normal to focus on your sense of self-worth and then blame any emotional problems on a lack thereof. If you’ve got the whitest teeth and they match the diamond-clad bluetooth headset that you’re constantly yelling orders into so everyone can hear you, you must really be at the top of the world. You’re killin’ it right? On the flip-side, if you’re such a hipster that you’d never be caught dead in clothing that fit you and you talk all day about how nobody is a unique snowflake such as yourself, you must really be doing well in life. You’re definitely killin’ it. Self-esteem is the stuff champions drink, right?
In Luke 20:45-47 and continued in Luke 21:1-4 , Jesus tells about scribes who try to position themselves with more bling so that others will notice them. In this sermon, Pastor Tim Gaydos points the congregation to Jesus by showing that all in attendance have the propensity to be like the scribes and pursue self-esteem at all costs.
45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
21:1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
