Serving where you’re not gifted

“Whatever you do, work heartily. . . . You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23–24

At some point you have probably been required to do something at which you weren’t skilled. From playing a different position on a team, to working on a school assignment or helping out around the house, there are countless things we are asked to do that we’re not good at.

We must be willing to serve outside of our areas of giftedness and talent, including for the local church. There will be times when the church has a particular need. You may not be the most gifted or talented person to do the job, but God may be calling you to help for a time. Whatever we do, we have an opportunity to do it for God, to glorify him.

The church is like a family. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. As a family, we pitch in to help as needed. So, serve where you’re needed, even if it’s only for a time. And do so joyfully.

Read

Hebrews 6:10–12

  • What work and love do you show “serving the saints” that it feels like is most often overlooked by others? What is it like to hear that God sees it? (v. 10)
  • We want everyone to serve with this earnestness and the “full assurance of hope.” How will you be able to encourage others in this? (v. 11)
  • How can you overcome sluggishness to take on faith and patience in this work? (v. 12)

Prayer

Thank God for how he perfectly gifts. Ask God for the Spirit’s discernment to see opportunities where you can best serve the saints.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.

Cheerful givers wanted

Jesus is the most generous person who ever lived. He gave his life so that we might live. As Christians, we give our time, talent, and money joyfully in response to Jesus’ generosity and to help more people meet Jesus.
