“All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women.” Acts 1:14
Have you ever played sports or participated in activities with a group of people who shared a goal? It’s good to be on a team, isn’t it? Teamwork brings a certain sense of enjoyment, fulfillment, and satisfaction—especially when things like winning, achieving, or earning rewards are involved. God created us to enjoy relationships with others who have a common vision in mind.
But today’s text demonstrates a goal that’s even more important. In it we see believers gathering to pray. They share a common goal of surrendering their wills and actions to God and submitting themselves to him together as one accord, or in one voice—a real prayer team!
There is no greater unity than unity that is formed by God. When we come to God together in prayer, there is great power and deep enjoyment. If you are reading this right now with your family, know that together you form a team. As a family, isn’t it amazing to think that, when you devote yourselves together to prayer as they did, you’re all like the first followers of Jesus?
Read
- What do you usually pray about? What does God want us to pray about?
- Besides it just feeling sort of polite, why do you think the phrase “with thanksgiving” is in there? What changes for you when you make a request to God with thanksgiving, instead of making one without?
- When we pray with thanksgiving, we are giving the amazing promise of “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.” How is this possible? How does God do this?
- What does the verse say the peace of God will do for our hearts?
Prayer
Father, make us people of prayer like your first followers. May we be humble enough to admit that we don’t have all the answers and need help, and may we also be humble enough to acknowledge that there is much to be thankful for. Amen.
