“And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42–47
This Scripture passage portrays the best picture of a small group—ever. As the early church grew, they devoted themselves to the Word, prayer, and fellowship, sharing meal after meal as they gave generously and watched God do amazing things in their community. These were not religious duties they were obligated to fulfill—these were things they longed to do, things they were privileged to do. The early church’s example paints a clear picture of what today’s believers should be devoted to (i.e., the Word and prayer) and demonstrates how we can practically love and care for one another.

Prayer
Father, please bless us with a warm, giving community as seen in the book of Acts. We have community with you through Jesus’ sacrifice and the Spirit inside of us, but we don’t always feel this with our brothers and sisters. Make our meals together sacred and joyful, and make a way for those who are far from you to join in our fellowship.

“Our small group has an unbelieving gal named Katy. She came to group in a pretty tough spot. She was friendless and without a car, and basically she was finding her community in the beds of dudes from bars. By God’s grace, Katy is now growing in Christian community by attending our group. We raised money and helped her buy a car. Now she is a good friend who is completely involved in our group, and she’s starting to question her identity as someone who allows guys to use her. This week she told us how blessed she feels being with us, her new friends who love her without judgment. I believe it’s only a matter of time before Jesus will save her.”
