“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself . . . And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?’” Luke 24:27, 31–32
If you get a chance read this whole passage from Luke 24:13–35. From these selected verses though, let us start out with some questions: How do you go about reading God’s word? Do you approach it as something to be simply learned? Or are you allowing God to reveal his word to you?
Here we have two disciples walking along, but not really connecting any of the dots of what they witnessed the previous three years with Jesus. As Jesus walks with them, he opens their eyes to see his life, death, and resurrection now tie into their understanding of the Old Testament.
In my many years as a pastor, I have met numerous people who know more about the Bible than me, but they miss the fact that the Bible is all about Jesus. We should read Scripture to love, know, and glorify Jesus more. The Bible is not to be mastered. It is God’s instruction on maturing in Jesus Christ. One way to say it is Jesus is the crimson thread throughout the Bible. Another way is that you can’t interpret any aspect of Scripture unless the person and work of Jesus Christ filters it.
Ask God to reveal the Bible in such a way that you marvel about the Father, love Jesus intimately, and apply the work of the Holy Spirit deeply.
