Have No Other Gods: Sermon Recap

This past Sunday, Pastor Mark kicked off the Ten Commandments: Set Free to Live Free series with a sermon on the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Ex 20:1–3). We’ve compiled some social media highlights to give you a recap and for you to share.

  • Freedom is not the ability to do what you want; freedom is the ability to do what you were made for by God. #10Commandments
  • Commandments, laws, or rules are different when they come from a father than when they come from a dictator. #10Commandments
  • Jesus is the greater Moses and the one who alone fulfills the law. #10Commandments
  • Jesus is the greater leader who did not kill his enemies like Moses, but let us kill him. #10Commandments
  • Jesus is the greater Passover Lamb who is slain to remove God’s wrath from us. #10Commandments
  • Jesus is the great Savior who redeems not millions from one nation but billions from every nation. #10Commandments
  • Freedom to choose your master is no freedom at all. #10Commandments
  • God is not just at the top of our priority list but demands to be at the center of our life. #10Commandments
  • If you’re not a Christian, your biggest problem is not your behavior or your conduct. It’s your God. #10Commandments
  • You can’t live free until you realize there’s only one God, and you’re not God. #10Commandments

  • The Ten Commandments are in the context of God has already loved, God has already served, God has already set free, God has already adopted these kids into his family. This is not about obeying him so that he will love you; it’s about him loving you and helping you to obey.
  • When your Father says, “Don’t do that. Don’t do that,” remember the heart of your Father. Don’t just look at the law, but look in the face of the Lawgiver.
  • Who or what do you live for? Marriage, children, promotion, house, beauty, sex, pleasure, comfort, leisure, sport, peace. When good things become god things, they’re bad things.
  • Jesus has conquered our pharaoh, Satan. We have been set free. We can live free. We have a Father King who loves us and adores us. And we get to take to the streets, and we get to sing and shout his praises. Free people have someone to celebrate.

Redemption: Freed by Jesus from the Idols We Worship and the Wounds We Carry

By Pastor Mike Wilkerson

This is the book that Redemption Groups here at Mars Hill use. Pastor Mike Wilkerson walks through the story of the Exodus to explain God’s grace, faithfulness, and redemption in our lives.

Martin Luther explains idolatry

During a sermon from the Trial series in 2009, Pastor Mark read a quote from Martin Luther (1483–1546) about idolatry from Luther’s commentary on the Ten Commandments. We’ve got that quote for you, and you can read more of Luther’s writing online.

Jesus on money, idolatry, and comedy

Here’s a sermon from the Luke series where Jesus calls out a rich man on his sins of idolatry and pride, and explains two ways to find your idols: follow the money and figure out what’s not funny to you.

Worship: God transforms

In 2008, Pastor Mark preached the Doctrine sermon series. Here is an article that explains how idolatry is essentially a worship problem and provides some practical questions for evaluating the idols on your own life.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
