Nearly one hundred parents, grandparents, and a handful of single dudes joined Mars Hill Sammamish last weekend to be trained in godly parenting. Continuing on the theme of the Malachi sermon series, the parents learned how to lay a foundation strong enough for their children’s children to stand on.
Pastor Alex Ghioni taught the first session on Proverbs and how its wisdom is exceedingly useful in raising and instructing children. His full session can be listened to here. Afterward, a grandmother remarked, “I loved listening to Pastor Alex teach, as he shared stories from his personal life on parenting, I felt like I knew him personally and could trust what he was saying.”
Deacon Deborah Rowe taught the second session on counseling a child to salvation. She emphasized the importance of setting a foundation of the gospel in their younger years. Two children, who were surprised to be part of the session, helped her demonstrate techniques she uses as she walked them through the gospel. It was amazing to see their responses to her training. Her full session can be heard here.
A father with young children said, “The most powerful thing for me today was being reminded that it’s not me or a prayer that saves anyone. Jesus saves. I need to be reminded of that all the time as a parent.”
Another father with young children said, “This training is an awesome and timely reminder of how to receive God the Father’s wisdom as a son, and apply the gospel to loving, training, and discipling my kids.”
One of the single men in attendance said, “I’m not married and don’t have kids yet, but my biggest takeaway from the event was from the content on Jesus, the book of Proverbs, and wisdom. The reality that I, who am foolish, get to live under the benefits of wisdom I don’t deserve and Jesus who was perfectly wise suffered for my foolishness blows my mind.”
This was Mars Hill Sammamish’s first parent’s training day. It was met with such a good response that they will hold similar events in the future. To stay informed of future events, follow them on Facebook.
And for a bonus, here’s a video of Deacon Deborah Rowe going through the Gospel in Motion skit from our Mars Hill Kids curriculum:
