Obey God

“But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” Acts 5:29

As kids, we probably all disobeyed our parents at some point. You likely learned that disobedience isn’t worth the price tag it comes with. God commands us to honor our mother and father.

Hopefully this will never happen, but imagine a scenario where suddenly one day your parents insist that you forsake Jesus. Would this be a good time to disobey them? Sadly, it would. There are times to obey and times to disobey.

In our text for today, we see that Peter and the apostles are told once again to stop talking about Jesus. But they aren’t swayed, for they know that obeying God is vastly more important than listening to men who don’t know him at all.

Do you think they made the right choice?

For most Christians, there comes a time when one must decide which is better—obedience to men or obedience to God. When faced with that decision, we should pray to our Father in heaven and seek advice from brothers and sisters who know and love God and his Word.

Read

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31

  • What should be our goal in any circumstance we find ourselves in?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you felt pressure to “fit in” instead of obeying God and giving him glory?

Prayer

Our Father, give us wisdom and strength when we find ourselves in situations that are very challenging to navigate. We are weak and need your help. We know you have promised to give it by your Spirit, and for that we are thankful. Give us eyes of faith to persevere. Amen.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
