The happiest words a sinner could ever hear

“. . . forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

Understanding the truth of God’s wrath allows us to appreciate more deeply the truth of God’s grace and understand the happiest words a sinner could ever hear, “God in Christ forgave you.”

Are you in Christ? If so, then God has forgiven you for all of your sins— past, present, and future. Jesus Christ shouted, “It is finished,” as his final words in triumphant victory from the cross. At that moment, sin was atoned for and sinners were forgiven.

Read

Ephesians 4:31–32

  • When have you felt like someone assumed your forgiveness of their sin or took it for granted?
  • When have you assumed forgiveness from God?
  • What’s the difference between assuming forgiveness from God and trusting in the promise of it?

Activity

If there are enough people in your family, you can act out this lesson. Let one person pretend to be a judge, another a criminal on trial, a third the prosecuting attorney, and the fourth Jesus. This can be acted out by having Jesus pay the penalty for the criminal’s sin and showing that the judge, who represents God the Father, is satisfied with his payment.

Prayer

Thank Jesus for satisfying the wrath of God on your behalf. Ask him to show you how he’s forgiven you. Ask for him to give you, through his Spirit, his heart for others who need your forgiveness.

This devotion is adapted from the Who Do You Think You Are? Study Guides with Daily Devotions resource.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
