Why does Mars Hill have a pastoral residency program?

A call to raise up leaders

At Mars Hill Church, the mission God has called us to is to make disciples and to plant churches. In order for that mission to continue and grow, we need leaders. That’s why we started the Lead Pastor Residency Program.

In light of this calling, it’s hugely important for us as a church to make sure we are doing all we can to heavily invest in the men who will lead the charge and shepherd God’s people at every local Mars Hill church. The residency is designed, not just to impart skills and training, but also to forge a bond and passion among our residents for the church.

First class

This year will be the Lead Pastor Residency Program’s second. This last year has been an incredible learning experience for the four gifted men—Alex Early, Drew Hensley, Ryan Welsh, and Ryan Williams—who have participated,

Our residents were placed with lead pastors at a handful of local Mars Hill churches. They were given the unique role and challenge to shadow and learn all they could from these seasoned leaders. They also received regular mentoring and coaching with our executive elders and other ministry leaders across Mars Hill. Today, three of them are leading Mars Hill churches today. You can hear more from them about their year in residency in their own words in the video interviews here, with Pastor Mark.

Your turn

Does this sound like a strong call you’ve had on your heart? If so, then this could be where you come in. We’re currently looking for a new group of men who have a deep love for people, the local church, and feel called to pastor at Mars Hill. No matter your background or experience in church ministry, the Lead Pastor Residency Program could be what God is calling you toward. If you have a track record of leading and being able to mobilize people, then you might be just the guy we are looking for.

Even if your experience is not just in church ministry, we would love to have you apply for our Lead Pastor Residency if you feel God has gifted you to lead and develop leaders.

Ready to apply to the second class of lead pastor residents? Go for it.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
