Strength to stand the test

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” James 1:12–15

Sin is like lethal poison. Our desire to have something or someone, whether physically or virtually, causes deadly trouble. Let’s not accuse God of the trouble we bring on ourselves.

By his grace, he is working in us a steadfast faith that will last forever. In Christ Jesus, we have already conquered every temptation and made our desires subject to the one who saves us. Because of Christ’s work for us, we have the crown of life, so when we fall into hard situations, we can hold out for this eternal hope. That’s God’s desire for us. He has written our names on crowns of life. He gives us the strength to stand the test.

Questions

  • Do you ever feel opposed by God?
  • Have you ever thought God was tempting or testing you because he dislikes you?
  • How would you describe your struggle with temptation?
  • How would you describe your relationship with Christ after you sin?
  • How does God help us remain steadfast under trial?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we have hope, righteousness, and everlasting life by your grace alone, and we confess that’s more marvelous than we can understand. We usually think of ourselves as dirty and unworthy. We usually think of you as uncaring. But by your wonderful grace, you have given us faith and life in Christ Jesus. You have blessed us to be able to stand under heavy trials. You have made us worthy to receive a crown of life from you. Please keep walking with us this week so that we will continue to hope in you. We want to remain faithful. Please make us faithful, for your precious, holy name. Amen.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.

The Mars Hill Guide Leadership at Mars Hill

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
