Life at Mars Hill: West Seattle v. Rainier Valley

Lincoln Park witnessed the absolute annihilation of Mars Hill West Seattle by Rainier Valley at their annual Summer Kickoff Picnic on Saturday.

On the longest day of the year, 200 people from both churches joined together for good times and good food. There was a wings cook-off competition, unequivically won by Jeremy Echols of West Seattle. The wings he made were so hot that the church member who ate one, despite the warnings, ended up eating grass in a desperate attempt to stop the burning in his mouth.

Soon after the festivities began, the churches took to the softball diamond for a bit of “friendly” competition.

While many people of both churches hung out, threw frisbees, and sat around, relaxing and talking as their kids played in the wading pool, Rainier Valley schooled West Seattle in the art of softball.

“The first game ended early (in accordance with the slaughter rule), as Rainier Valley, showing absolutely none of the Lord’s mercy, won 20–0,” wrote Rainier Valley's Executive Deacon, Nate Porter, in a report.

Amid the crushing competition, the idea of one church in many locations was lived out.

The second game of the double-header was much closer, but still ended with Rainier Valley the victor, 15–10.

“The next day, there were guys with hurt shoulders, ankles, sore muscles, and crushed pride, but ultimately we all had a great time,” said Alan Felts, an intern with West Seattle.

“This should happen more,” added Nate.

Nate will get his wish soon. Pastor Bubba Jennings from Mars Hill Tacoma has challenged Rainier Valley to defend their status as victors at a time and place yet to be determined.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful rivalry.

It's All About Jesus

Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?

At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.

We value community

Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
