In Genesis 12:1–3 God makes a covenant promise to Abraham that he will make Abraham’s family into a great nation that will be a blessing to all the peoples of the earth. In declaring the truth that Jesus was born into the family line of Abraham, the genealogy of Matt. 1:1 connects Jesus to God’s covenant promise to Abraham that all people would be blessed through his lineage.
