We are currently going through the book of Acts and, landing on chapter six this week, it seemed fitting to call the church to action. In Acts 6:1-7 we read about how the early church made a priority of caring for the basic needs of people like widows, some of the most vulnerable people in that society at that time. Widows didn't have clout and had no way to earn their own living. Without a male relative, they had no hope. The early church put their resources into taking care of and defending such populations.
Inspired by the early church's emphasis on care for the most basic necesseties for those in need, Pastor Mark Driscoll has called on the church to respond in a practical way.
Mars Hill, we’re having a food drive.
Dig in and bring some nonperishable goods to your local Mars Hill church before May 25th. Each church will decide where the goods will be distributed to have the greatest impact on your community. The announcement will go out to all the churches in this coming Sunday’s sermon and your lead pastor will soon be armed with more detailed instructions for your local church’s drive.
Once all the food has been collected, we will keep you posted on how much food was collected at each location and where it was distributed.
This is a very practical way for the church to love our communities, so please be generous and help us lavish Jesus’ love on the people around us. This is also a strategic opportunity for our churches to build relationships and invite people to church, turning a food drive into a gospel opportunity. So pack it in for Jesus and let’s love our neighbor by meeting their physical needs, you know, like Jesus does.
