The name Jesus is a Greek equivalent of two words brought together in a Hebraic construction—the words for Lord and save. In Matt. 1:21 an angel explains more fully the significance of this name, stating, “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” At the cross, where he died in our place, for our sins, as our substitute, Jesus most fully accomplished the significance born into his great name.
