In declaring that Jesus is “the son of David,” Matthew 1:1 boldly declares Jesus to be the fulfillment of 2 Sam. 7:11–16, where God makes a covenant with King David to establish from his bloodline an eternal King, who will rule from an eternal throne, in an eternal kingdom. Jesus is this righteous warrior-king, the answer to prophecy, established forever, from the offspring of King David.
